Self-Renewal …and a Happy New Year!

Posted on December 26, 2014 | in Leadership & Management | by

Self-renewal is unquestionably a core principle of highly effective leaders.  As the New Year approaches, this is a perfect and natural time for renewing your focus in life and as a leader.

During the month of December I like to take a few minutes each day with my favorite cup of java to go off to a private place and think about the upcoming year. Then, in the last week of December, I increase the frequency and rigor to tune the focus.   Here are several questions that can help you to think about formulating your plan for the New Year with the hope of kicking it off strong, and sustaining the momentum:

• What is your purpose in life that will make a difference (if you have a pulse, you have a purpose)?
• What are your personal goals and objectives?
• How will you keep your life balanced with your faith, family, and work?
• What can you “de-clutter” to make room for new opportunities and needs?
• What will you do that is exciting and pushes you to your full potential?
• What new knowledge and skills do you plan to learn as well as pass on?
• How will you follow-up and execute your personal plan?  (Disciplined Follow-Up is where most “New Year’s resolutions” find traction that leads to success; lack of Follow-Up is a formula for failure!)

Leaders face more complex challenges and responsibilities every year, requiring an intentional method of Focus and Follow-Up.  My hope is that you take time this next week to deliberately think about your self-renewal plan.  Write it down. Those who adhere to the principle of self-renewal with a disciplined process will be the most successful.

Happy New Year! … And may you have a fun and fulfilling year.
… And Pass It On!

Quote from poet William Arthur Ward:

“Another fresh new year is here…
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright New Year is given me
To live each day with zest…
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sign more joyful songs!”

Happy New Year 2015!

  3. Great reminders for my favorite time of year! I’m going to make printout of the word “follow-up”, frame it, and put it on my wall near my monitor.
