Benchmarking Sustainability at USZWBC Conference

Posted on April 25, 2015 | in Sustainability | by

“We are the best in the world at Sustainability!” declared my direct report VP.
“How do you know?” I asked.
VP: “We are the best anyone could be”
I persisted: “But, how do you know?”
VP: “Because, my team is good!”
My next comment: “I agree your team is good. But, this is the question: Are we using every best practice and new idea known in the business world? What do your internal and external Benchmarking results reveal?”
VP: “Huh?”

Having just returned from an offshore business trip, I knew he was underestimating the quantity and potential of unknown opportunities. Then, as we strategically benchmarked our other plants and other industries, the revelations motivated him and his team to deploy game-changing initiatives. To be World Class, a search and discover process to find the best ideas is paramount.

This year’s best Benchmarking Sustainability event in North America will happen in Los Angeles, California, May 5 through 7. Their fourth annual conference, the US Zero Waste Business Council (USZWBC) has events where you can:
• Learn about the latest best practices for businesses pursuing Zero Waste
• Network with the nation’s leading businesses that have already achieved Zero Waste
• Meet vendors who provide the latest equipment and services to get to Zero Waste
• Find out how to get a facility certified as a Zero Waste Business
• Find out how to get certified as a Zero Waste Business Associate

USZWBC2Hundreds of people like you and me will be attending, sharing best practices, experiences, and searching for the best-of-the-best Sustainability ideas. Whether you have Sustainability responsibilities at the executive, staff, or frontline level, you will not want to miss this event.

To learn more about the USZWBC Zero Waste Conference, or to register, go to www.uszwbc.org, or visit Elemental Impact at www.elementalimpact.org. You still have time to sign up. I will be there, and I hope you will be too.
…And Pass It On!

I wish I could experience a zero waste environment. I remember discussing this with you KB many years ago. I guess the key is internal and external audits to make sure your doing what you say your doing. Human nature being what it is, leads to temptation to hide waste. Superior preventative maintenance I’m sure allows material specifications to be optimized. Frequent material inventories against book value verified these results.
    Have a great conference.
